Memories...

Why do people hold on to memories so tightly? The answer is simple: because when everything in the world around us changes, memories are the one thing that stay the same.

Thats it, that's just it.. those things we call "memories" are our best friend and our biggest enemy, all rolled into one. We cling to them; some are forgotten with time and some are etched into the blueprints of our hearts as the years pass, but nonetheless, for a time they exist. Some memories last a lifetime while some memories are forgotten with time. Some memories are happy, and some are sad, some will fill your heart with joy and laughter and some will bring you to your knees in tears. But why? Why do we hold onto the ones that make us sad, the ones that hurt, the ones that are painful to remember, the ones we forgot to forget? Life is funny in that aspect, we can't pick and choose what we remember nor can we select that which we wish to forget...and isn't it odd that the more we try to forget something or someone, the further they are written into our memory? Memories haunt us, not in the spooky ghost way, but in a more subtle way. They come and go as they please, they don't ask for permission or warrant a reprieve, they just are. And with their existence comes feelings. Some feelings are uncomfortable, and some are the best in the world, some make your skin crawl, while others make your heart sing. Its in those times, those memories, those feelings when you truly grow. Without memories, we would have no sense of growth, or record of where we have come from. Without these memories, we would never to appreciate the good things, the great things, and the rare things in life while they are in our presence. Without memories we would die alone and be forgotten. Without memories, how would we remember to remember?

Some may refer to memories as a curse, while others may refer to them as a blessing, but I'd like to call them a gift. Not all gifts are good, and not all gifts are bad, not all gifts are great, nor are gifts are horrible. But, as with any gift. you gladly accept it and take it for what it's worth - to you and the other person. You make the best of what you're given. Sometimes it may seem as if the gifts you've been given are not so great and the once clear air has changed into a dense fog, but do not fret, for just around the corner is a great gift waiting to be given to you. Don't give up and don't lose hope, don't get discouraged, and don't feel worthless. Memories, they are what keep us going, and are also what hold us back... but in the end they all add up to a lifetime.

So whatever you're going through, whether it be good or bad. Just remember, wherever you are in life; in the happiest and saddest moments of your life, to never forget how you're feeling in those moments.. because those feelings are what compose the masterpiece that we call life.
